HELPING DISPLACED CHILDREN WITH AGRICULTURAL JOBS

About the Anglophone crisis

The socio-political crisis in the two “Anglophone Regions” (North West and South West) intensified in 2016 and in late 2017, long-running tensions have escalated. This was as a result of the marginalisation of the English speaking minority in the above two regions in Cameroon. More than 9,200 cases of civilian protection rights violations were registered, mainly involving physical abuse or threats, and lack of legal protection. The humanitarian situation of the affected population has fast deteriorated. Insecurity and violence from both government forces and non-state airmed groups have forced more than one million people to flee their homes and continue to have serious consequences on livelihoods and living conditions. The number of civilian deaths has increased from 70000 in 2019 to about 3000 in 2021. Following recent reports from UNICEF (June 2019) about 80% of the schools in the two English speaking regions stopped functioning, 74 schools registered burnt and 650,000 unaccompanied or separated children are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance and psycho-social care. More than 9000 homes or houses have been burnt. Over 500,000 inhabitants fled their homes and found secured places in the bushes and some to neighbouring countries like Nigeria, Chad, Gabon etc., as refugees; for over three years now.

Help to the displaced and needy children

Key Farmers Cameroon alongside other national and international organisations in Cameroon has been involved in defending the plights of separated and abandoned children during the crucial moment of the Anglophone crisis till date. Our activities included food distribution, training on poultry farming, mushrooms and seeds multiplication, distribution of NFI toolkits as well as providing them with educational support.

However, these children need further helping hands. To enable them to have a brighter future, Key Farmers Cameroon has come out with an institution called: Agro-industrial Vocational school of Agriculture and job creation “AGROVOCS“. AGROVOCS has been created to accelerate vocational education for displaced and abandoned children in the domains of agricultural sciences; agriculture value chains, food manufacturing, income-generating activities such as mushroom farming, apiculture as well as aquaculture and livestock. In addition, they would acquire training in Business management skills, ICT, Agro-forestry, Environmental Education, Peace Education, Food manufacturing etc. The training courses would combine both theory and practical work for duration of three years. At the end of three years trainees would receive certificates/diplomas by KFC. They would also receive employment from the organisation. Key Farmers Cameroon would support other displaced children to create jobs in their various communities.
